""" As with business PC's, nav PC's should only run
the absolute bear minimum of software. Get another PC
for everything else."""""
I'll 2nd that. My experience as a Computer
Programmer/Computer Consultant over the last 25 years
is that 99% of the time my clients workstation issues
have something to do with all the many many software
downloads that they have done -- and the other 1% is
hardware. We use to re-format the harddrives and
re-load and the computer would go from junk to great.
Now they are too cheap to spend the labor to re-format
-- now they just get trashed (even though they are
just in a need of a re-build).
The key (like it was stated before) is to keep the
navigational computer clean -- only run a few well
known programs. Also, we are talking about 1/4BU for
a brand new Dell to serve as your backup -- I paid
that much for a washdown pump.
There is a risk to everything -- but your PC on your
boat is probably the least of your worries. The user
(skipper) using the computer - now that is another
story.
Enjoy your evening,
Robert Meyer
