Hello All,
When I had reliability problems with my Windows
98 SE computer (home built) somebody on the
"Live-Aboard List" recommended that I use
'msconfig' and inspect the drop-down window called
"Start". When I found 8 million entries listed,
every single one of which was checked, it was
recommended that I uncheck everything
except"Explorer" and "Systray".
After I did that all my lock-up and "Blue Screen
of Death" failures went away.
Oh BOY!
Recently (in the last few weeks) my computer has
started resetting itself for no apparent reason.
Very frustrating and getting more and more
frequent!
This morning before I left for the store I
started Microsoft's Memory Diagnostic program
(after downloading you have to make a bootable
floppy, it actually does it for you). I checked
just before I left, 4 passes, no errors.
When I got back from the store 4 hours later
(another story altogether) there was such a long
list of errors I got tired of scrolling and just
turned the program off.
Tomorrow I will install the new "Crucial" RAM I
bought a few weeks ago. The RAM I have in there
now is the cheapest I could find when I built this
machine 2 years ago.
So I guess the lessons here are these. First, go
into "msconfig" and uncheck everything under the
"Start" drop down except "Explorer" and "Systray".
You do NOT need every program you ever installed
loading up part of itself every time you boot up.
The programs all will work exactly as always.
Second, cheap ram works, for a while. Buy the best
you can afford as soon as you can.
In a week or so I will report on the results of
installing the new RAM (upgrading from 256 Mbytes
to 384 Mbytes too).
