John, this is from a post of mine, it happens to be almost 5 years old.
So, I have just copied it again. The thread was about buying a boat with
the Turboed Lehman's.

Subject: Lehman Turboed Engines.
JIm,
I have 3 experiences with those engines.
A 68' Sailboat from Tahiti to Panama.
A 42' Twin Screw Powerboat for a day in Puget SOund.
Parts are a problem. The engine should have the intercooler removed once
a year, the part ultrasonically cleaned and then pressure tested. A
failure of this part will destroy the engine. A $20K problem. The
cleaning and pressure testing is about $800 per engine, I think.
Of all the Lehman's only about 10 percent were the Turbo Version.
If they have over 2500 hours and have not been rebuilt, they are near it.
A serious going over of two will cost about $8K. That's what went into
the twin screw I mentioned above, last winter.
YOu can run them at 1200 RPM, will burn 1.5 gals per hour. NOt
recommended for more than a day at a time.
The engines themselves are ok. It's the stuff they marinize them with
that goes out. And that stuff is no longer available. Raw water pump is
marginally sized. Any loss of performance will result in an overheat.
Some hoses hard to obtain and expensive, over $125. Intake valves must
be checked and confirmed to be TRW, stamped with a "T". The other valve
stamped "L", has to be removed. This can be checked removing just the
valve cover.
No attempt should be made to change the governor or other settings back
to "original ford specs". The Lehman specs must be used, found in
obscure service bulletins.
Propensity to smoke on startup and soot during cruise.
Mermaid makes an engine that is drop in replacement.
Only source of parts is American Diesel in Virginia.
What it really boils down to is how much use they have had and what sort
of shape they are in.

The 225 uses a single intercooler, the 275 uses 2. The cost to test and
check the 275 was about $1600, five years ago. You may have damaged the
engine badly, already without knowing it for sure. The engines are not
likely worth rebuilding and you have a twin, which makes the situation
worse. Choice of replacing one, or both. Anyone with a boat with the
Turboed Lehman's should take scrupulous care of them, because the cost
is almost prohibitive to replace. YOu may not be in this situation yet,
but you could get there and you won't be a happy camper if you do.
