    Seriously, much of the Canadian shoreline is sparcely populated.
    There are fewer people who might notice a flare and its a good thing to
    carry extra to keep the lights going until someone notices.
    Good thing we don't boat in the winter. At that time no one would notice
    flares 'cuz everbody is inside weatching Hockey Night in Canada! <VBG>

    As for the fire axe, you need that when you get shipwrecked on a deserted
    shoreline and need to build a big bonfire with.
    Have you ever tried to break through a Bomar hatch or a fibreglass hull with
    an axe? It just bounces off.
