Here's my $.02 worth re kayaks. My late husband and I each had a Prism. They were molded poly something, sit on ocean kayaks. We used them both in the Gulf and in local canals and creeks. Fully enjoyed them. They had two storage areas plus elastic straps to tie things on the 'deck'. When Jim passed away, I sold both of them and later regretted that. at one point, I looked for a new boat, especially in a wonderful store in Old Saybrook CT which carried a large number of types. I am a poor swimer and have mild claustrophobia and the idea of being 'enclosed' in one terrified me. I tried a highly recommended Pongo but felt too confined should I need to get out quickly and easily. I did not plan to use it where I needed protection from getting wet. I had good wooden takeapart paddles and used the straps on them to prevent it from getting away from me. A kayak without a paddle is, well...useless! then single, I need to consider weight, had to be able to load/unload it on top of
the minivan, so I needed a carrier with rollers.
When I used my Prism from our dock, I found it VERY HARD to get onto or off the kayak. I could wedge it between the dock and sailboat for stability but usually had help doing so. Getting into one from a swim platform is something to consider!!! Someone recently mentioned having a boom made that swung out and worked to support him while he got on/off the kayak. Be SURE to consider how you will do this! Be sure you test the boat for tracking. I had to laugh out loud once in Essex CT as I watched some man sashaying all over the place! He was wasting 90% of his energy I'm sure! I still pine for another kayak but realize that at my age, I have too much trouble getting up off the floor and that is stable at least! I now realize that I can use my nice fiberglass dinghy to explore the neat places surrounding Cinderella and can fall back on the motor if needed. I hopeI never have to row an inflatable again! Yes, I had classes on how to use the kayak including getting back on it
(akin to a mastectomy!) You need to know how to use the paddles for stability as well as how to paddle efficiently. They are a LOT of fun...IF you can find a place to store them on board!
