By the way, the fairy tale weather forecast from last night has since
"gone well south" and is really awful.
Now before someone comes along and points out rightly that a 40'
Nordhavn is no soft bellied pig in a poke that can't go to weather, I
should point out a couple of things.
First, the remnants of Tropical Storm Aletta, that died off of Mexico
last week are dropping southerly swell into the anchorages along the
Southern Calif. coast. This means that if one takes off up the coast
with the wind howling out of the NW and plans hole up in some quiet
anchorage, the anchorages are going to be unpleasant, perhaps even
dangerous. Actually, I am not certain that is the source of the So. swell.
The second problem is that although the Nordhavn is quite capable of
slogging it out in conditions of 20-30 knots expected. It is a long way
from San Francisco to Pt. Conception and since there is no forecast of
decreasing conditions, it is better to anticipate worse ones and not be
surprised. All in all this situation argued for caution, rather than
"full speed ahead, damn the torpedoes".
As General U.S. Grant said, as I recall, after the disastrous rout of
the Union Army near Pittsburgh Landing(Shilo), "do better tomorrow".
