T&T: Chafing gear

    It appears that most of the worries about chafing lines are centered on the
    point where the line passes through a hawspipe.
    So why not a pad eye, or other fixture outside the hull, just below the toe
    rail? It would need to be substantial, and backed up well on the inside of the
    hull.
    In the ideal setup, a thimble with the line spliced in would pass through the
    pad eye, and the line brought on deck through the now unused hawspipe. This
    arrangement could be used as an anchor snubber, or fastened to a longer line
    for tying off in hurricanes.
    I could see 6 of these, two each for bow, amidships, and stern, and I don't
    think it would be too ugly.
    And chafe would be a non-issue.
