We think we will be fair weather kayakers - minimal waves, sheltered
areas, nice weather, but cold Main water. Did other people think
that and change their mind with experience or is it normal to stay in
that mode since our primary exploration vehicle is the trawler?

Could people share a little about what has worked for you?

More and more boats seem to have kayaks aboard and we too have just added
one to ours. We ordered it and picked it up last weekend. There is an big
tradeoff between length and both launchability and storability especially on
anything less than a large trawler. As a result, we opted for a 10 foot kayak
after talking with friends who had several of them and absolutely loved them.
Our use will be similar to Wray's use. We figured that we would not be
getting that far from the mother ship so the extra speed, tracking ability and
load carrying capacity of a longer boat was trumped by the ability to store the
boat on top of the pilothouse and the ease of launch and retrieval. We also
have friends with rotomolded boats of this size that they love but we opted
for a hard shell. The boat we got was a Hurricane Aqua Sports Santee 100.
It is extremely nicely made. It is 32 lbs, comes with foot braces and fore
and aft bulkheads with hatch covers, deck rigging and a great, adjustable
seat. We wanted the bulkheads, which are relatively rare in the smaller boats
so that if we swamped it, there would be less water in the boat to bail out.

(http://www.hurricaneaquasports.com) No affiliation just pleased with my choice as I suspect most posters
will be pleased by the kayak they have selected! We also selected a 2 piece
paddle so that we can take it apart for easier storage. Certainly not the
kayak for rough water or a 3 week trip but that is not how we will use our
    kayak.
