MIT produced an excellent study on mooring rode chafe prevention a few years
back as part of the Sea Grant program. In summary the study suggested a
combined nylon - dacron rode. One feature was a novel way of joining the two ropes
to preserve most of their strength. Another suggestion was to fly a small
riding sail to prevent veering at anchor. This sail substantially reduced the load
on the anchor line.
I would be happy to send a .PDF version of the MIT study to anyone who
requests it.
In a recent article, the Dashews suggested using an 8 braid dacron Brait rope
as an anchor rode instead of their previously recommended 8 braid nylon rope.
They felt that there was enough elasticity in a long rode of dacron braid and
its abrasion resistance was much greater.
