I purchased and installed the 453 oil filter adapters a couple years ago and
it was fairly simple to do. There wasn't room to mount the filters right on
the engine, which is an option, so used a remote setup. I had a machine
shop manufacture a couple of heavy aluminum mounting brackets to which I
mounted the remote filters. A hydraulic hose company made the hose and
fittings for the connection from the engines to the filters, which makes a
very tidy arrangement. The end result was fine, except that I consumed a
small part of the area between the engines where I normally kneel for
repairs and now my butt won't fit between the two filter units. This
sometimes requires some different maneuvering to work on the engines or down
into the bilge.
Adapter for engine is part #05134303 cost $121
Valve kit (I recall this was an oil pressure diverter) part #05198303 cost
$5
Remote adapter for spin on filter part #05104115 cost $86
You also need a gasket part #05121205
The filter element PF911 AC part #23518671
The filter element number may be different now, since I purchased one a few
days ago and the part #23530407 $15
I also feel the same problem exists with the fuel filter on the Detroit 453
and thought that it was messy to change, although not as bad as the oil
filter. I changed that to a screw-on filter using an adapter. This isn't
as difficult to make the changeover since you just remove the old bracket
and replace it with a different one that accepts the screw-on filter. I
replaced my fuel lines at the same time.
I can directly email a picture of my layout if you desire. I will be
traveling from Sat for two weeks and may not respond immediately if a
request is made.
