If memory serves me correctly, Detroit Diesel made an adapter plate that
bolted in place of the filter canister. It had two hose attatchments on it
that went to a remote filter housing. After having searched High and low, I
can't find a 53 series shop manual right now, but I do have a pair of 8-53s
in my shop and after having looked at them they have the adapters on the
block. It has a square 4 bolt pattern and completely replaces the original
canister/cartridge filter housing. They have hoses that go to remotely
mounted filters. When I figure out where I put my 53 manuals I will look up
the part numbers. The 53 detroits had very good parts crossover so the
adapters should be universal on all of them.I agree that the can/cartridge
is very messy and inconvenient. You would like the newer style much better,
and, you can put the filter anywhere you like My 4-53s remote filters have a
small stainless pan under them with a drain/valve arrangement that is tied
into the oil change pump, we don't spill a drop. The engines make up for it
though !!
