    Somewhere in the process I would assume that you would have a smooth even
    surface before you apply the varnish. There are to reasons for me to sand 1 to
    flatten the surface and 2 for adhession. As for removal I use a heat gun and
    scraper. Then it's sand paper time. You can tell if there is some residual
    epoxey when you revarnish.
