Jim,
Katahdyn likely uses the same or similar technology for both large and
small units.
I used a small Katahdyn hand held water purifier about a hundred years
ago while in West Africa.
I believe it was of Swiss manufacture and, as I recall, it was the
best of the small units available at the time.
It was well built and an extremely good little tool.
At that time, I had the ability to take samples of the water it
produced and microbiologically plate them.
Consistently, it produced water that was bacteriologicaly clean - even
from very foul sources.
However, I don't believe my unit could filter out viruses nor could I
test for them.
Most likely, an appropriate UV unit would have eliminated viruses.
I am not current on water purification technology, but based on past
experience I would thoroughly investigate Katahdyn.
Hopefully, they will have even improved their technology.
You might consult with the folks at REI in Seattle for general advice.
