I had an old Garmin antenna that I was told it was worn out. I
futilely followed its demise. That antenna, when we bought the
Celestial, drove two separate displays (one at a time) via a switch.
It worked very well, and was quick to initialize either display.
Then, after about a year, I noticed that the GPS was having problems.
At first, it took forever to lock onto each satellite, then, over
time, it would only lock onto two satellites. And finally, none. I
tried new connectors. No effect.
The only thing I can think of that might have happened is that
water/moisture may have formed in the antenna and effectively ruined it.
Most (if not all) remote GPS antennas are much more than just an
antenna, but also contain the pre-processors for the whole receiver.
It is possible, that moisture, due to the frequency range that GPS
operates at, is changing the capacitance/reactance of the
pre-processor circuits, and essentially is de-tuning them.
I never thought to take the antenna apart and dry it out in a low-temp oven.
Anyway, that is my guess, YGMBMC....(Your Guess May Be More Correct). :)
After I replaced the "worn-out" antenna, the system has worked flawlessly.
