    well, normally an epxerienced boater will be able to know if the boat is
    safe to be taken out. unless maybe we're talking about vintage wooden
    hulls!

    when i bought my 53, the contract stated that a sea trial was gong to take
    place before survey. considering the dogs i had seen, i wanted to make sure
    it was ready for survey.... it doesn't have to be as detailed as a sea
    trial survey, but just enough to make sure the boat is operational. it
    turned out we had to scrap the ST because of weather and i decided not to
    reschedule before the survey adn full seatrial as i coudl tell the seller
    was using the boat regularly and I was confident about its condition.

    otherwise, I'm not spending a $ on survey... I've heard too many stories of
    surveys being aborted because an engine doens't start or overheats....
