Roger:
I did a lot of research on this a year or so ago. We lived aboard and after
the phosphates went away we were getting a lot more suds. The reason you
are getting all the suds is because there are no phosphates. There is a
washing machine forum out there (yeah, I know) and you can find it on
Google. They have people that actually have found a source for the
phosphates and they add them back in because they produce a much cleaner
wash. Apparently commercial laundries are exempt from the phosphate rules
so other people buy these.
Short of this I think your only choice will be detergents made especially
for front loaders. These produce less suds but more than I would like.
