    Marge,
With all due respect, and I do respect your knowledge and experience, which is clearly beyond mine, I disagree with some of your posting.
    a. [Marge] "To me the proposed round the world trip via a Nordhavn 43 by six NOVICES sounds insane!" [scott] I agree that embarking on a trip like this when your skills are classified as "novice" would seem foolhardy. However, I don't know that we have enough information to know exactly what they mean when they say they are novices. Some people are very humble about their level of skill, I learned long ago that the more I know, the more I know what I don't know! Perhaps we will learn more about exactly what their skill level is if I'm successful in reaching them via email. Untill then I'd suggest they are more likely to be more sane than being a brick short of a load! As far as the boat, there is no question the platform is capable of making the trip, but weather exposure must be managed carefully, which is true for boats of any size.
    b. [Marge] Six people on a 43' boat is just plain nuts, and to me it's nuts to even TAKE a 43' boat on a voyage like that. [scott] I believe the email said 6 West Point grads "purchased" the boat, I don't believe it said they would all be on it at the same time. It is certainly possible to take that impression away from the comments. The last email I saw suggested there were only a few people on board for the trip to HI.
    c. [Marge} I am always angered when boaters take off on 'adventures' which then require others to jeprodise their own lives to save them when they run into trouble. Just to satisfy their own huge egos! [scott] I agree that it's fair to get upset IF that possibility plays out, however it's also fair to postulate they won't need assistance. They are also taking the risk if they are disabled in the ocean and require help, they are subject to the rules of salvage on the high seas and may loose the ship. As far as expecting to be rescued, I doubt 6 West Point grads all age 60 or above would ask anyone to come rescue them. I'd expect they'd deal with the issues on their own and work the problems to the best of their ability. In the end, if they exhausted all options I'd expect them to draw straws and break out the recipe book '99 ways to cook your buddy". The last guy alive would probably scuttle the boat so the wives could get the insurance money. I'm only half jesting
     about
    this.
    d. [Marge] even huge cruise ships are being threatened by pirates? in the near east! Get real! I guess ignorance is bliss until a storm approaches. [scott] For some reason I'd like to be a fly on the wall if a band of pirates confront a group of West Point grads. The drop out rate from our nations military academys is about 40%. The fact these guys made it suggests they are not likely to be ignorant. I bet the more we find out about them, the more respect we will have. I must admit, when I first heard about Idlewild and Ben Gray I thought "wow, what is that sheep farmer doing"? Today I marvel at what a man he must be. I wish we had more people like him. I bet he's a great guy to have a cup of joe with, probably not a hint of ego to get through?
In summary, let's give these guys a chance, we really haven't gotten enough info to form any real opinions about them or their plans. I'll provide any information I'm able to get for those that are interested. Thanks, scott
