Gentlemen:
My contribution:
1. Aircraft do not use red cockpit lighting. (source: Boeing)
2. I find that a mini-mag, the head cupped in my hand, is thus provided with
a mechanical dimmer for its white-light, and surpasses anything I've used or
seen.
3. Red lighting and/or filters should be chosen with care, as a great deal
of white light is allowed to be transmitted along with the red.
4. If using 12V rope lights, they should be operated from their wall-wart
power supply (120VAC) rather than the 12VDC system in order to assure
reasonable life.
I have an intense dislike for red lighting. I find that there is sufficient
light from the monitor and gauges, and, at times, too much. However, I have
been known to read while on watch at night, 50 miles offshore or more and the
radar clear. Un-lit dhows need to look out for me or display proper lights.
Regards,
John

useful safety illumination in a recreational yacht?
RED LED foot lights, a rope light with dimmer control, or overhead red
lights.
