I have been approached at least 4 times by ships running dark at sea. My
response is first to call on VHF, (with lat and long of your vessel and the
vessel approaching and ID that the ship is dark), the chances are that you
will not get a response. The next tactic is to use a powerful search
light--and it will ruin your night vision--but you still have the vessel on
radar. Two were U S Coast Guard vessels. Both eventually asked for our Doc
number, how many persons aboard etc. One was a DEA boat which never responded
(we saw it leaving Key West the next day at dusk--they had the habit of hiding
behind bouys, so that you did not see them on Radar, until they came out
toward you rapidly. The 4th was a patrol boat of a Central American country.
I just anounced that I saw the boat running dark, that we were an American
Vessel in route to ..... and two persons aboard--they shadowed us for awhile
and then broke off. If I was threatened, I would get on the VHF and SSB on a
distress frequency--unfortunately less vessels moniter 2182 under the new
rules.
