Jeff asked:
Question: If you were planning to have a boat built in the 40 foot range,
would you specify two 30 amp outlets or a 50 amp system. Why?
Reply;
I would suggest two 30 amp plugs for many of the reasons already mentioned
and after having cruised for several years I will warn you that many marinas
in the northern US and Canada are only equipped with one 30 amp outlet per
slip which is no problem if you have your boat wired with 30 amp plugs. You may
also save considerable money in marinas that offer 30 amp service as
standard with an additional charge if you require 50 amp service as the less
expensive service may well be sufficient most nights.
I would suggest that you consider including one of your air conditioners on
your normal house cord so you can run that that air with just one 30 amp cord
assuming proper management of your other demands.
I have cruised with friends who would actually use one plug to cook and heat
water and provide for other household demands and then have to switch plugs,
disabling their normal household loads in order to run their air to cool
the boat down before going to bed at night when only one 30 amp plug was
provided. Not convenient to have to switch back and forth, as you might imagine.
I know that this would not be normal but it may be something to think about.
