Although I got blasted yesterday for not "double checking" my information
about Canada, my posting was based on some of the differences between CDMA
and GSM from my experience. For whatever reason, CDMA (Verizon) is only
available in North America. Within that area, different providers have the
ability to allow digital connections or block them. It would seem that
Canadian providers do not support Verizon's customers. In essence, this is
all a cruiser really cares about - whether they can use their phone with
    data as they cross borders.

GSM is different (Cingular, etc). It has been adopted internationally. I
took a big-ship cruise in the Caribbean last Fall and I had GSM/GPRS email
access in Grand Cayman, Mexico/Yucatan, and the Bahamas. It didn't require
any new plans or any configuration changes on my phone. It just worked. Of
course, there was a surcharge of a couple of dollars for each digital access
    - I think it cost me an extra $10 for the week I was gone to get all of my
email. The exact same thing happens in Europe. I would assume that it
works this way in Canada too for GSM.

A GSM coverage map for Canada/Atlantic is at:
    http://www.shoprogers.com/store/wireless/coverage/reg_network_map.asp?map=16

The GSM coverage map for the seaway looks pretty good too:
    http://www.shoprogers.com/store/wireless/coverage/reg_network_map.asp?map=15

Although I won't know until I'm there myself this Summer, I fully expect my
digital data cell connections will work seamlessly because of GSM.

For what it's worth, the Treo/GSM has a really nice feature of synchronizing
the clock to the GSM time and time zone. When you step off the plane in
Paris, you don't have to reset your phone - it resets itself based on the
current time zone and local time. This generally impresses the people
around you who are fiddling with their watches upon arrival!
