I just saw this on boatdiesel.com. I think that this is entirely consistent
with what would be expected from a careful reading of their fuel flow specs.
It takes a very wide range and very accurate flow sensor to work with a
diesel and Navman hasn't figured it out yet. The Navman system may work well
for some and not at all for others.

    Caveat emptor!!!

Hi Guys, I thought I'd better warn anyone considering
purchasing a Navman 3200 Diesel Fuel Computer. I recently had built a new
boat powered by a Yanmar 315 LP Diesel motor and after checking around I
decided to have a Navman 3200 unit fitted to compliment the motor and check
on fuel usage, fuel tank contents etc, they also have an accurate rev
counter fitted to scan the pulley etc. The press releases and advertising
for the unit state that it is suitable for ANY diesel motor between 100 and
500 HP. They are new to the market and were released in Australia and New
Zealand late last year when I purchased the unit to supply to the
boatbuilder to incorporate with my boat on order.
I recently took delivery of my new boat and and am happy
with the boat, motor and performance etc, but on attempting to program the
Navman unit I found that I was having trouble with readouts of fuel flow.

I then contacted Navman manufacturing direct who said, of
course you can use it, it is suitable for all diesel motors within the
prescribed HP range, we will check on it for you.

They asked me to find out from the Yanmar
dealer/distributor what the fuel flow figures are and on checking it appears
that Yanmar use a fuel delivery system of an extremely high volume, (Quoted
at about 750 litres per hour at full flow) The idea is that Yanmar have
designed the fuel delivery system to use the high flow of diesel to cool the
pump and injectors. Navman then said, No you cant use this unit with that
motor as the flow is far too high and when I reminded them of their
advertising they agreed to take back the Navman unit and refund the purchase
price through their distributor. I am now faced with uninstalling the unit,
and although its not a big deal I am faced with the original boatbuilders
installation cost, the electricians cost, and a large hole in my helm facia
    panel.

Yanmar the manufacturer said to contact the supplier whom
I purchased the unit from (who, incidentally, along with the local
distributor) knew nothing about the Yanmar/ fuel flow situation) I have
asked them to also claim my installation costs from the distributor.

I will keep you posted on what happens, but before
purchasing one of these units (which I still feel to be an excellent unit
for '' Normal " motors) I suggest anyone check their proposed motor fuel
flow as they definitely will not operate on a 6LPA ?" STP 315 HP.

I do not know if it applies to other Yanmars of higher or
    lower HP.

It looks like Flowscan may be the go.

                      Regards, Rob.

The navman fue 3200 has been retired by the company. It is
    not sold anymore.
(got this information from the navman guy who responded to
my inquiry on the web site - information was confirmed by a dealer.)
