One thing I haven't seen anyone mention yet in favor of a mast and boom
is the advantage of having such a device should someone go overboard and
need to be retrieved. If you've ever tried to get someone who can't do
much to help you back on board a boat, or even up onto a swim step,
you'll know it can be a very difficult task, if not completely
impossible depending on the size and strength of the people involved.
Having a mast and boom with the proper tackle that can be attached to a
Lifesling or other such rescue device can make getting someone aboard
relatively easy even for someone of small stature and strength.
