T&T: Trawler Mast/replacement

    Your original mast and boom were made of quarter sawn mahogany glued
    together with a square hole left in the middle through which the spreader
    light and mast top light were wired. You could reconstruct one from a
    variety of materials, a nice straight grain cedar would be good. On the
    other hand, the boat next to mine in our club has been fitted with one made
    of aluminum which I would consider better for its reduced weight and no need
    for maintenance. The original mast had an elegant bronze top rigging from
    which the mast stays were hung and there is a similar smaller one for the
    end of the boom and one where the boom attaches with a collar to the mast.
    These can be occasionally found in marine recycling shops but are expensive
    to say the least. For me, reproducing the whole thing would be a
    significant investment. I keep my trawler in a house and must lay the mast
    down before entering. The whole rigging is a PINA, but it is pretty and my
    wife insists that it be up if we are to be seen by other proper trawlers.
