Knowing that M. Siegel is a professional in new technologies, I wish he
could double check his informations before spreading any "I would be
    surprised to hear..."

It's not exactly third world around here. 1x data has been available for a
few years (at least 3), and EVDO is yours since last summer 2005 in urban
networks, Greater Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Quebec City, and probably
    others.

In Canada, for any accurate information, check Telus or Bell Mobility for
CDMA ; Rogers and Fido for GSM.

While in USA, my Telus connection (EVDO and 1x) gives me access to Verizon
    network at no roaming charge.

My Rogers telephone gives me access to AT&T at no roaming charge if I choose
    the North American plan.

As for wi-fi access, I live in a normal suburb 10 minutes from downtown
Montreal. Just for fun, recently, I went 4 blocks around my house with the
laptop searching for wifi networks (check Kismac to do so on a MAC). In
about 15 minutes, I could identify about 125 networks, 30% of them beeing
    wide open (no password).
