Just to add my 2 cents, PMM (Passage Maker Magazine) had an article a while
back (I'm not sure when and since they, PMM, don't have their back copies on
CD/DVD it would be too hard for me to find but a note to them might do it)
on replacing a mast.
As I remember, the individual who replaced the mast also wrote the article
and gave very specific steps about doing it. He did it in a couple of days
and from the pictures it looked great.
Keep in mind that if you do a mast, there will need to be access to running
wires not only for the radar, but also for lights as well. This article took
all this into consideration.
I've sent PMM many requests to put past issues on CD/DVD as it would be
better not only for research, but also for onboard storage, with no avail.
Who can afford to store old magazines. I've also suggested that the magazine
and almost any magazine, National Geographic would be another good one,
should be distributed on CD/DVD. Less paper, less printing, less weight,
less ecological impact all around, less cost to the subscriber and always
accessible/available for reference. Doesn't almost everyone have a computer
of some sort on board now?
Before I get a raft of complaints, I'm not advocating that they immediately
cut off the paper issue. Give the choice to the subscriber and let the
market decide. Paper or plastic (a CD/DVD isn't plastic, but you get the
idea).
I guess it's difficult for an industry tied to paper for so long to think or
move to a different media.
Oh, by the way, air clearance is important so make the mast able to be laid
down if necessary. An anchor windless on the bow would make it a piece of
cake to raise and lower a mast.
Good luck with your project.
Best regards,
Charles

Doubt very much if it was made of teak or even mahogony. Most likely it was
something close to spruce. Not hard to make again and could be fun. Might
make
it of clear fir. Made a boom for Rollsdoc. Rigging can be had with swedges
from a rigger. Just look at another and make notes. There are other places
to
mount the radar but the boat with a mast and boom looks pretty kewl. So
what
if you have to open a bridge. That's why they open.
