Some things to consider when making a passage through "Matlacha Pass" east
side of Pine Island. It starts out at the ICW with marker #1. It is 9
nautical miles to marker 55, just prior to the Matlacha Bridge. From marker
56 to 78 (3.17 NM) there is ample water for 7' draft, paying attention to the
tides. At marker 78 you enter Charlotte Harbor and it continues to marker 99.
>From there you can see Boca Grande Pass.
I teach a class on boating in Charlotte Harbor and always includes Matlacha
Pass as a very beautiful cruise with the following warnings.
1.. Pay attention to the tides and winds
2.. Don't plan a cruise through it in December through March
3.. Slow down and enjoy the beauty. 25 knots can be dangerous in any draft
boat.
4.. Some turns are more than 45 degrees and the channel is narrow. Turn to
late and you may run aground.
Using the Matlacha Pass bascule bridge tide station I believe a boat with 4'
draft cruising in May through November and doing it on a rising tide on a day
with a mean high near 2' and paying attention too wind speed and direction
should have no problem. You say that is a lot of things to pay attention to.
It is but it is also one of the most pleasant trips you will find scenic wise
on the Florida West Coast at speeds under 10 knots for the south end.
