Peter,
I stripped 15 years of bottom paint off of a 36 footer with a 2" flat spackle
knife. I tried the expensive pull blade tool from Home Depot, but could not
get the correct bite. Whereas a very sharp 2" flat blade allows you to push
under the old layers and scrape it clean down to the white hull.
Tips I learned:
- sharpen the spackle blade with a grinding tool to get it razor sharp! You
can then sharpen often at the job site with either a knife sharpener block, or
what I found best was to sharpen the tool on the sides of the concrete blocks
that hold up the boat.
- try to lengthen the handle of the spackle blade. I pulled out the blade and
inserted it into a longer handle. This gives you much more leverage and allows
you to push in areas with both hands.
- pick a square area that is a yard square and start with that...don't even
think that this will be a weekend job.

Subject: Re: T&T: Stripping bottom paint
Peter, I did 20 years worth of old bottom paint on my old Chesapeake 32
sailboat and found a few sharp 1/2" chisels peeled it off like magic right
down to the gell coat. It took a while, but it looked great when I was done.
I know it doesn't sound like it would work, but it does. Try the chisel
first, if it's too onerous for you, you can always do the chemicals...
