We have used hot water for this. A heat gun, propane torch or other
concentrated heat sources can soften one part and not the whole hose end.
This will lead to uneven expansion and usually will cause leaks down the
road. The vinyl types of hose is not very tolerant of this while the rubber
exhaust types are much more tolerant of using the 'heat gun' approach.

The hot water is uniform and though it is usually more of a pain to get does
    do the job correctly.

PVC glue on a hose fitting on a boat??? Ugh...makes repair/replacement a bit
    of a bear!

As an aside using the proper fitting also helps. Many of the barbed hose
filleting are not made for reinforced hoses. They tend to be a bit to big.
Forespar makes a line of fittings, Marelon, which actually fit the
reinforced marine hose. They have a longer neck so using the normal double
    hose clamps is easy.
You do use 2 clamps don't you ;-)
