I have been using the color Platinum model for a season. I doubt it
would do you much good on a flat, 5' bottom -- It does have to
contend with the laws of physics. It is handy in the Pacific NW when
entering rocky nooks. If I go dead slow and look at it, I can have
some confidence that I will not run into a rock. Is it worth the
price? I don't know, but if it keeps me off one rock in its
lifetime, it will have paid for itself.
It is very well built with a break-away transducer that can be
removed (with excitement) from inside the boat. Unfortunately, it
does run at 200 Khz, so I had to turn off my other depthsounders that
run at that frequency. I have not used an Interphase, so I cannot
compare it, but there is at least one northern latitudes sailboater
who argues that the Echopilot has really changed the way they can
enter anchorages in those poorly charted waters. (I can't find the link).
Best,
Steve
