Yes I understand the issue since I am planning a cruise in Canada this
summer and the idea of paying the outrageous prices NDI charges for
their raster charts is unacceptable. Fortunately their contract with Can
Hyd expires in 2008. I use my old laptop as you do for navigation only.
It is a back up for my Garmin 2010 plotter which of course uses Blue
Charts - at least one can find some of those on line second hand. Also
using their North American CD with a burner and release codes is
cheaper.
I am not sure why you wouldn't trust vector charts since they are the
international commercial standard now. S-57 is a set of regulations
approved by IMO and IHO (the international organizations responsible for
the safety at sea requirements and related cartography) for
standardization of cartographic data exchange between Hydro graphic
Offices, Regional Chart Distribution and ECDIS producers.

Re: Snip "Another downside to Coastal Explorer is that it wont accept
the older charts. I have close to $1000.00 invested in the 1st version
of the BSB charts that I am unwilling to dump. I have Nobeltec 5.0.452
and stopped there. (I also have version 4.1.400 as a backup) I am
waiting for the time that they refuse to supply a new site code and key,
for the 5.0 version, as I had to get one from them last summer when my
system crashed and I had to reformat my HD. I now have a dedicated Nav
computer with nothing else installed except Nobeltec; DeLorme Street
Atlas and MS Streets & Trips. I do not really trust the Vector charts,
as was discussed a few months ago where some rocks were dropped from the
display. Nigel Calder had a very interesting series of articles a
couple of years ago in, I believe, Professional Navigator, where he
discussed the algorithm that creates the Vector charts, where he brought
up that very point. Besides which, they are about $250. a crack from
Nobeltec, another BU!! The free ones don't do me any good, as 95% of my
cruising is done in B.C. waters in Canada. "
