Not quite so fast Rob re the efficiency ;-)
The normal AC diesel genset has a wee bit of loss also. If we take a typical
8kw 1800rpm AC genset running at its max power level, which usually equates
to it's highest efficiency, you'll find a loss of 35% or so based on the
fuel used, HP generated and actual KW output. So we don't have a free lunch
going this route either. You also have to take the back side of converting
some of the AC to DC to charge the batteries which run the 12 volt users.
This is notoriously inefficient do to poor power factors on most chargers.
I think the SYSTEM difference is closer to 10-15% if you have a heavy user
of 120 volts and less if you build a DC/AC boat.
There are just way more aspects and variables in this equation that we think
of when discussing a system solution. Then we have the AC/DC
proponents...aka my way is better ;-)
I think a systems approach that uses the best attributes of each component
is always best. High current 120/220 volt loads work best with an AC genset,
as these loads taper down the a DC alternator driven Inverter system can
come on line and as they taper further a battery driven inverter system can
silently provide the required 120 volt power.
Getting boat manufactures to put in systems that will do this is highly
unlikely unless they can buy a 'package'. Folks like Arild and other 'system
thinkers' have an uphill climb even with the way above average folks on this
list. Think about the first time boat buyer of some of those other brands we
kick water at. Try selling the advantages of an integrated fuel saving DC/AC
power system to them.
