BoatUS' magazine has an article on bridge clearances and potential fines. One thing they brought up is what is the acceptable air space margin between your clearance and the bridge's clearance. They suggest that 3 feet may be acceptable, but that there isn't a regulatory reference.

I found this to be surprising as every bridge operator I've encountered on bridge's that I'm very close to not clearing I've been informed of the additional 3 feet clearance at bridge center. To me, they are telling me that if I can clear in the center that I better not ask for a bridge opening. I've also assumed that the clearance boards have some safety factor included in their clearance number, although I could be wrong on this.

Interestly enough, this article states that bridge operators can also be fined for being unresponsive to opening requests if the request is any time other than a scheduled opening time. I sure wish I knew that last year passing through New Orleans when I had to raise the Coast Guard to get their assistance with a bridge operator that was non-responsive to VHF and horn signals for over 30 minutes.

Do you factor an additional amount of clearance before you call for an opening?
