I'm always amazed at what these guys can do with barges, usually with just
massive raw horsepower. However, even good captains "lose it" occasionally.
Last I saw was last October in the GICW West of Galveston. Three empties
strung out, righting a crosswind and then ran across an outlet with a tide
going out across the ICW. Poor guy ended up sideways in the ICW, effectively
stopping all barge traffic until a second towboat could come to his rescue
from their home port. We managed to slide around behind his stern because
we're a small boat. I've also seen them run aground in Red Can Bend right at
Galveston several times. The good news is that is usually isn't a big deal
with the soft mud bottoms and steel barges. They just power off, or wait for
a tide change then do so. We ran aground once when I was working on the
towboats... They left me in the pilothouse and everybody else went to bed
until the tide came up.
