    I was also told by a towboat port captain that all they need to operate a
    towboat is a license equivalent to the towboat capacity, as in 100 tons. When
    you think that the barges aroung the gulf total 1000 tons or more it shouldn't
    be any wonder that they run into bridges down here. The issue isn't tonnage
    per se but the experience required to get the license.
     
    On that same note, he told me that he had a real awakening when they put him
    on the "Safety Committee". He (as I...) had always thought that towboat
    operators were on constant vigil and always under control. He said that he was
    pretty much convinced that the towboats (few of which around here have a bow
    thruster by the way.) are pretty much on the edge of control at best,
    particularly when pushing a string of "empties" with a crosswind.
     
    I've seldom had a reason to agree with his opinion on the latter, not once
    having had a towboat captain "lose it" in my presence, but I always wondered
    how they could manage pushing an empty six-pack in a cross wind.
