Elliot,
Seems the 160w may be a bit shy for the typical desktop computer.
Starving it for power would create problems with the P4, with any
additional drives (CD, HD) or other power-consuming peripherals, I doubt
if the 12v PSU you linked would pass muster. From what I could see from
the website, it may not be able to power the drives. Even the most basic
computers using a P4 board have a 200w power supply. Why not just power
the computer from an inverter and use a UPS to take up the slack when
the inverter switches? The UPS wouldn't need to power the system for
very long, so it wouldn't need to be exceptionally large (or costly).
Could be had for less money than the 12v PSU. If power consumption is a
concern, ANTEC and other higher-end PSU's are available in
higher-efficiency models that generate less heat (wasted power).
I'll add the caveat that I'm not an IT professional, but I've built a
lot of (way too many, according to someone higher up on the chain of
command) computers, and have had best success with the Antec product line.
