I just bought a gizmo that will allow you to convert any remote control
that will only work with IR into a control that will operate in any room.
I have my TIVO in the saloon and TVs in the pilothouse and the Main
    stateroom.

It is truly ingenious the way it works.

The unit consists of a IR eye that sits in the room with the TV. In the
standard TV remote control you replace one of the batteries with a special
AAA sized sleve which is an RF transmitter which holds a special
rechargeable battery that makes the pair into a AAA battery. If your control
uses AA there is another sleve that transforms the pair into a AA battery
size. A spare special size rechageable battery sits in the 'eye' unit ready
    for use.

Hope you can follow that. Anyway the installation takes about 30 seconds. It
operates my regular cable DVR flawlessly from across the house. I will
install on the boat later this month.
