Well I didn't want to get to long in orig post but...
We do like the home unit, as it's already connected to all the speakers the boat, and I actually have large speakers with aux amp I can put on top deck, but it has inputs from a, VCR, DVD, a CD, the laptop, a Bose and has the power to drive all the speakers. Of course we usually have a gen set up and running and "had" a big inverter.... Inverter is T.U. and it's a good reason try and begin installing some power consertive systems. Our main DC power source is 32V.... Lots of that... but I only have 2 small gell-cells for instrumentation/ VHFs to use for now. I do plan to make the 32-24 conversion (see earlier posts) soon.
thanks John

What is the purpose of keeping the home stereo? A little more info is
needed on your objectives to give you the right answer. Are you just
buying the 12v product for the CD player? If so, get a car stereo
with amplifier outputs and use RCA cables from the CD player to the
CD input on your receiver. You can still use the volume and other
functions on the 12v unit, merely leave the home receiver on.
