I posted a question about checking the quality of gel cell batteries since you
can't test the specific gravity. I was talking to my battery guy and it turns
out that there is a portable load meter that you can use to test these things.
Its a digital device, about the size of a carton of cigarettes and easy to
use. He loaned his to me and sure enough, one of my four batteries is goin'
south. I think I'll replace all four since they are all of the same vintage.
We are headed to the Chesapeake in the spring and I'd rather deal with this on
my terms, in my town.
I was reading through the manual for my Link 2000 and noticed that there are
two charge rates available for gel batteries. The first is a normal charge
and the second is a more aggressive charge. I don't know if that setting
allows a longer charge in the bulk phase or what but I'm wondering if I should
use that to get a quicker recharge when I'm on the hook and running the
genset. It is so easy to reprogram that I could certainly charge normally
when at the dock and change the programming before running the genset. Do you
suppose that this would also effect the charging cycle of the 120 amp
alternator?
