I'm also looking at converting our 32V system on our Hatteras, but I
will
likely go with 12V's stacked to provide 12, 24, and 36 as needed. The
pumps
and windlass should do fine with 36V and I can use the 12 and/or 24 to
drive
invertors/chargers.

If there is room to install them, I would look at using the 2V cells
offered by Rolls.
Their literature suggest the individual 2V cells can be grouped into
assembled modules with a foot print equal to an 8D case. The amp hours
capacity is slightly better. Several advantages of the individual cell
approach can be realized. You can also replace individual cells if you
do get a problem. Because the cells are in a series string, the charge
current must be forced through each cell. This provides for a better
recharge than when you have parallel cells to increase the amp-hour
rating. Because the current must pass through each cell the sulfate gets
removed more evenly than when parallel paths are involved.
However, you may run into some problems if you deplete the 12V portion
to a greater extent than the whole 36V string.
Second issue concerns the existing charging facility.
The alternator and shore power driven charger will be set for a nominal
system voltage of 32V not the 36 volt of three 12V in series. Unless the
alternator and charger can be adjusted the three 12V batteries in series
will never become fully charged and this means they will sulfate more
quickly than normal.
The individual 2V cells in series means you can stack just enough cells
to achieve the nominal 32V and the chargers now match your battery
properly. Rolls may not be the cheapest solution but they are good
quality.
