FWIW-- between February 1994 and October 2004 we have been full time
cruisers. For the first 4 years, on a sail boat, we used a Toshiba laptop running
Capn, with no special enclosure or protection. In 1998, still on a sailboat, we
bought a low end Sony, mainly because we got a deal on it and in the hope that
Windows 98 would be a more stable OS. Again no added environmental
protection. Hauled them between shore and the boat in a plastic bag on our RIB. In
2004 we bought a low end Compaq notebook again hoping that Windows XP would be
more stable, and it is! We also wanted the XP box so that we could run Coastal
Navigator. We are still running Capn and also have Coastal Navigator.

Something to think about: if all you are doing with the lap top is running a
nav program, and perhaps word processing and email you need only a very basic
computer. 256 of RAM and 20Gig hard drive is plenty and a 14 inch LCD
display works for us. This means that you can buy a new laptop for between $500 & &
$600 as of today. In other words you can buy 3 or 4 machines for the price
of one of the "ruggedized" or "marinized" boxes.

BTW the laptop we started out with in1995 is still on the boat and working.
    Same for the Sony.

    Regards,
    chuck
