I have long used stainless hex head studs to replace the mfg brass slotted
screw studs on my Jabsco salt water engine pumps. I've found it much easier to
place a socket over a hex head nut and have it stay in place than trying to
reach in,up and around with a slotted screw driver. The stainless bolts last
    forever.

Also, I have been told that when the rubber impeller creates ridges inside
the traditional brass cover plate, one can just turn the cover plate inside out
and begin anew with the smooth outside surface against a new impeller. I only
change my impeller at about 500 or 600 hours, about four or five years or so,
so the time involved is minimal. Last time several impeller blades were
cracked but still functional in one engine; all blades in the other engine were
fine but I changed in anyway.
An impeller puller is highly recommended: it makes the impeller removal job
fast and easy and avoids roughing up the lip on the pump when trying to pry the
impeller out. Use grease or antiseize compound on the new impeller and
    fastening studs.

Regular checks on e-bay can turn up impellers at about half price if
available. DEPCO rebuild kits are the best value I have found. From time to time DD
rebuilt pumps can also be found on e-bay at close to the price of a rebuild kit
maybe 1/3 the price of a new pump. I bought one with gaskets and carry it as
a spare. Its fits either engine.
