Question: Please detail to me what you do and HOW you do it relative to the
desulphators and equalizing. Hardware that is required, etc
Answer:
Among the many frustrating experiences with distributors, suppliers and
manufacturers was Interstate Battery reps INABILITY to discuss equalizing a few
years ago. They just did not understand it at all. Elsewhere online I have read
that batteries in active charge/discharge usage benefit from more frequent
equalizing....Everybody says to see mfg recommendations....I have no formula nor
specifics. A few years ago I could not find a specific recommendations from any
mfgs websites like Interstate,Exide,etc....I concluded there was not an
exact, demanding set of requirements for equalizing, maybe incorrectly.
As a compromise (guess) I equalize once in the fall after six months steady
use and again in the spring just before departure.
And with the battery desulphators (I forget the exact brand name) I finally
got a company rep who suggested one would handle a pair of 8D 220amp hour
batteries in parallel. (I still am not really sure) I now have three, two of which
each maintain two 8D's, a third desulphator serves a separate bank of three
8D's in parallel. I cannot vouch for their usefulness, but Arild has posted his
general endorsement. I chose the battery operated desulphator models because
they draw only about 10 ma each (Iess I think) and are powered from the
batteries themselves, so they work 24 x 7. 120volt powered units only perform when
power is available.
Finally, the use of desulphators SHOULD reduce the need for equalization as
both function to reduce battery sulphation. I never even got so far as to get
the the real question posed which is "If one uses a desulphator 24 x 7 is there
any need to equalize? and if so, when??"
anybody with answers???
