will tier 3 offer better fuel economy in a marine application, is a
non-turbo even more KISS-able, and what is the general consensus on electronic vs
    non-electronic engines.
    Comment:
A majority, I think, of T&T listees have said over the last few years they
prefer the simplicity and reliability of non electronic and non turbo engines.
Big displacement, low HP even in recreational applications has proven
reliability and longevity. However, turbo engines run at moderate RPM (hence moderate
HP) have been proven to be very reliable and in fact they eliminate water
cooled exhaust risers, a significant source of marine engine failures. Turbo's
boost HP and anytime you boost it in a given engine displacement, component
stress increases, hence the often better reliability of NA engines. Backing off RPM
a bit can alleviatre much of this increased stress. Unless you are running an
engine say 500 or more hours annually, longevity isn't a significant issue.
Occassional recreational use with long non run times kills diesels faster than
    electronics and turbos run sensibly.

When considering electronic control engines, note carefully the location of
the electronics (it should be high up on the engine) and ask the manufacturer
"can it be placed underwater and STILL be "waterproof"...At a recent boat show
that stopped a sales pitch right in it's tracks...I have seen electronic
controls knocked out by water spray from its adjacent twin engine partner. I told
the rep I would not buy the engine because the electronics box was down near
the bottom of the engine apparently subject to all sorts of water attack.

Let's see what else listees offer....
