Thinking of a trip to the Bay of Fundy in the summer of '06. Points East
Magazine offers a flotilla from Maine, others have done it on their own.
Interested in your experiences and thoughts.
Comment: I traveled to Nova Scotia with the Points East flotilla in 2002,
stayed an extra two weeks on my own, and returned alone. Both are nice ways to
travel. The flotilla costs about $400, includes some tours and group dinners (at
extra cost) and may offer some crew recruits, if needed. When I went, we all
traveled separately and met at designated harbors every few days. They have
their own weather forecast support. I enjoyed the flotilla but would go on my
own next time. Choice depends on your tempermant.
At Southern Fundy, Southern Nova Scotia, (appx opposite Eastern (Northern)
Maine) tides are about 12 or 13 feet. (Northern Fundy has 50 ft tides, I did
not travel there. St John River highly recommended by all who have been there;
can be HOT in summer. Currents may be two or three knots. Canadian weather
reports are like NOAA except it's in French one half hour, English the next, so
miss your little piece and it's an HOUR wait. Locals very friendly. Suggest you
consider commercial harbors, tiny harbors with commercial boats enclosed
inside concrete barriers...fuel,repairs,self oil change, free electric and tie up
and lots of local lore..I stumbled across these by accident...Be ready for long
periods of dense fog. Even fewer pleasure boats than Eastern (Northern)
Maine. No lobstering in summer, so no worry about floats all over, like Maine.
You'll want some modest heat early AM's as it can be cool and damp, but days are
comfortable especially when in harbors....Watch for Hurricanes in Sept,
October. Fuel is low sulfur. No chartbooks available, all individual charts at $15.
each.
I enjoyed the trip, but prefer Maine overall. Worth at least one trip for the
change in scenery.
