fairway past some other boats and then put the boat at the end, parallel to
the fairway (so it is not on option to back past and then go forwards into
the spot). I need to back the stern into the spot and then get the bow
in. As we all know, it is easy to kick the stern but much harder to move
the bow. How does one do this maneuver with grace (or at all)?

Reply: It may not be the manly thing to advise, but I'd suggest spending a
few bucks on someone long on experience (in your type of boat) and short on
ego to take you out in the boat and practice in calm and less calm
situations. Do it over and over again . . . repetition is the mother of
skill. Unless you gain the confidence, the boat is likely to just sit there.
A licensed captain with the needed experience in our area can be had for
$25/hour or less. Oh, and . . . . have him/her explain the power of the
    spring line.
