and I want to back down a fairway past some other boats and then put the boat
at the end, parallel to the fairway....
That's usually harder than going in bow first and depends on your hull...Bow
first is best..
..It's difficult to use momentum towards dock (while moving in reverse) to
move the boat closer to the dock while maneuvering, but if dock is to the stbd,
for example, use reverse momentum as your stern is dockside at approach at,
say a 45 degree angle, keep stbd eng in rvse, put port eng fwd to swing bow
in...problem is, without momentum towards the dock to keep you close to the dock,
this turn tends to move stern away from dock as boat turns....if current or
wind off the dock, even more difficult...
If this were easier than bow first, everybody would be pulling in to docks in
reverse..
Other approach: get a stern line or bow spring to the dock and use that to
turn...Some use a pole with a hook on the end to drop an eye on a dock cleat...
