    During the past 10 years we have traveled several times between Alaska and US
    West Coast and Mexico. More to the point we have entered Canada and cleared
    customs four times in 2003 and 2004. Cleared twice in Nanaimo and twice at
    Prince Rupert. We had a shot gun with us each time. In 2003 we were cleared by
    telephone. In Spring of2004 a customs agent at Nanaimo came to the boat,
    recorded the serial number of the gun and collected $25CDN. The fee was the same
    for 1 or more guns. When asked why we had a firearm aboard we truthfully said
    for bear protection in the bush and for hunting. In Fall of 2004 we were
    again cleared by phone. They could have charged us another $25 but did not.

    Recently Mike Eedy, a Canadian Listee posted what might be the definitive
    word on this subject;
