Bummer, but then again, your costs would be much higher had you purchased the vessell, sounds like you had a lucky dodge!

    Subject: T&T: purchase gone south

I just faxed a rejection notice to a MD broker today regarding a 58 ft
Hatteras sale that went south. The veracity of the agent's listing began to
fall apart almost immediately upon stepping aboard the vessel. Some listed
equipment was nonexistent, not working or badly damaged, the condition of the
vessel (i.e. "professionally maintained") was grossly misrepresented... blah,
blah. Despite the obvious problems, we still chose to pursue a deal believing
that it would be a good project boat if the price was right. Then came the
requisite survey. What a mess! Two failed attempts to complete the
inspection and about $2K lighter in the wallet, we still don't have a survey
report, as the seller failed both times to have the boat ready for sea trial.
Dead genset battery and a significant oil leak around a turbo on the first
attempt to sail and after repairs, a significant exhaust leak near the same
turbo on our second attempt to run the boat.

Now, we've pulled out and our feeling is that someone else is likely to get
stiffed if they get a less detail-oriented surveyor or fail to look under the
rugs so to speak. More importantly, there appears to be some serious, but
maybe not so obvious, safety issues with this boat. Is there an appropriate
arena/format to "share" - in a public way - what the surveyor did learn about
this boat through about 4 hours of inspection?
