The subject of keeping the sump under the shaft packing box pumped
out has been kicked around at some length without what I consider an
adequate solution. The problem with even a small pump of 300 gallons
per hour is that they come with 3/4 inch pipe outlets. By the time
you string 5-10 feet of hose on the pump there is quite a bit of
fluid in the hose, most of which drains back into the sump, when the
pump turns off. The solution I have experimented with is reducing the
hose down to 1/4 id right near the pump and keeping the hose as short
as possible. A 300 gph pump will only pump about 30 gph hooked up
this way with a 5 foot head of pressure, but it will clear a 5 gallon
sump in a few minutes and the remainder that flows back when the pump
stops is only about a quart or so.
Maybe a 500 watt laser could be used to vaporize the remaining water
and it would result in a perfectly dry bilge? But of course that
would defeat the idea of a simple solution.
